Cooling Refrigerants of the Future. An air conditioner or heat pump counts on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s circulated around your home. This liquid is contained within the coils of your home’s cooling system, but one of the most widely used refrigerants used for a very long time – the R-22 (Freon) is now being replaced because of environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. Production of R-22 will cease by 2020. Introducing R-410A Recognized by the EPA, R-410A is a chlorine-free and ozone-friendly refrigerant. R-410A will keep your home cool without harming the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most efficient systems are designed to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system perform efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and enhanced dehumidification, so you’ll stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Brian's Heating & Cooling, Inc. in Madera, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If your system was made before 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is scarce. Some manufacturers offer alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
